How You Can Fight Healthcare Disparities: A Conversation with the Gritty Nurses
In this episode, Adrianne welcomes back good friends Amie Varley and Sara Fung of the Gritty Nurse podcast for another lively conversation. This time they are focusing on ways individuals can take action against disparities in the American and Canadian healthcare systems.
They start with the basics of defining and identifying disparities in health care and go on to describe how nurses can work towards providing more equitable care. They also bring the T on what Amie really does when she’s on Twitter - with a bonus story of what NOT to do in the space. It’s a serious episode, but somehow always fun when these guests are involved.

In this episode, Adrianne welcomes Nurse Practitioner, educator, mentor, blogger, cancer survivor, and mom, Courtney Shihabuddin, DNP, APRN-CNP. She recounts her surreal experience being diagnosed with breast cancer just as COVID was causing the overwhelm and shutdown of healthcare facilities across the country in early 2020. She takes us through the timeline of her treatment, surgeries and complications very openly, candidly, and with just enough humor to keep us from losing our composure.
In this episode, Adrianne welcomes Judith Kimchi-Woods, the President of the Chamberlain University College of Nursing Columbus campus and CEO of Nursing One, which will be the focus of today’s show. Judy talks about how she created the non-profit Nursing One from a desire to see a unified voice for all nurses to advance issues that affect nurses in all settings.
Adrianne has some thoughts on how a staff nurse should treat a float or a traveling nurse - very specific thoughts. She shares some opinions of how we as staff nurses should be treating our travelers and floating nurses from the moment they arrive on the unit.
You know the ones we mean, where you're behind before you clock in, the call lights are non-stop and you may never get to pee again.
What are your secrets? Adrianne wants to hear your tips for keeping Zen when you know the 12-hours ahead of you are going to test your patience, endurance, and sanity.
This week, MRC is keeping it short and simple since Adrianne is flying solo on the mic. She's going to do her best to give you a peek into the Quality Improvement Project she's just started working on, and attempt to give you some helpful hints she's only recently figured out.
This week, Adrianne and Andrew give their two cents on nurses carrying malpractice insurance, crossing picket lines to go to work, Andrew admits he'd jet at the first sign of a storm with a human name, and Adrianne describes the creative, yet disgusting off-label uses for a Yankauer.
In this episode, they talk about being a nurse and a new mom, handling death in the ICU, pregnant nurses and isolated patients, how to spot a seasoned nurse, and more. If you missed part 1, go back and catch up, we'll be right here waiting for you...
Adrianne and Andrew are talking tattoos, marijuana, IV fluid shortages and body waxing in the first episode of 2018! Season 2 is guaranteed to be interesting and hilarious as MRC digs deeper into the minds of nurses. Join your favorite long-winded nurses for more stories, anecdotes and food for thought
This episode was recorded back over the summer of 2021 while Adrianne was unemployed and unlicensed in Minnesota. She was able to get Amie and Sara of the Gritty Nurse podcast on the line (they’ve had a busy busy summer) to answer all her questions. Their focus is on Amie and Sara’s activism in their home country of Canada, pushing for safety and respect for nurses. They have created spaces for nurses in forums that had no nurses at the table and they’re going to talk about how they did it.
